Prof.Dr. Dr. Nuri Azbar

 

Nuri Azbar is full professor at Bioengeering Department and head of Center for Environmental Studies (EU-CEVMER) at Ege University in Izmir, Turkey. His areas of interest include environmental biotechnology, wastewater engineering, sustainable production, biofuels and biorefinery, organic waste valorization. He wrote more than 110 scientific papers and publications and is co-author and editor of several books. He is member of scientific committees in international conferences, project manager and project partner in national and international projects funded by EU, TUBITAK. He participated as member in different national and international organizations and committees and in advisory boards. Moreover, he has been the primary director of 20 research projects funded by national and international institutions.

 

Prof. Jacek Dach

Jacek Dach is a professor in the Institute of Biosystems Engineering, Poznan University of Life Sciences in Poland. He is a creator and head of the biggest Polish laboratory for biogas and composting of biomass and biowaste. He is the author or co-author of over 350 works, including indexed papers, books and chapters in monographs, reports and conference papers. Leader of 7 UE and Polish scientific projects (participant in 15) realized in the area of bioenergy, biowaste management, gases emissions reduction from waste and animal production, applications of artificial intelligence in agricultural engineering. Author of several innovative technical and technological solutions in the area of methane fermentation, digested management and biomass pretreatment (7 patents).

 

   

 

Dr.-Ing. Mathias Effenberger, M.Sc.

 

Dr. Effenberger is Senior Researcher at the Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Animal Husbandry within the Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture in Freising, Germany. His main fields of work are anaerobic digestion technology and technology assessment for agricultural production processes. Together with his working group he assesses efficiency and environmental impacts of agricultural production and bio-energy systems, including the development of web applications to support farmers in optimizing their production processes.

 

   

 

Prof. Sandra Esteves (PhD)

 

Sandra Esteves is a Professor in Bioprocess Technology for Resource Recovery at the Sustainable Environment Research Centre, University of South wales (formerly University of Glamorgan) and also directs the Wales Centre of Excellence for Anaerobic Digestion. Sandra has a BSc (Hons) Energy and Environmental Technology and a PhD in the Monitoring and Control of Anaerobic and Aerobic Treatment Processes. She has delivered R&D in anaerobic processes for the last 20 years funded by EPSRC, Welsh Government, EU-FP (4, 6, 7), IEE, Carbon Trust, NERC, ERDF, Innovate UK and BBSRC for over £9M and have provided technical support to over 100 companies. Her research has focused on design, monitoring, modelling, control and optimisation of anaerobic and aerobic processes, sensor development, microbial ecology and profiling, feedstocks and digestates characterisation, pre and post processing, power to gas conversions and biological biogas upgrading, carboxylic acids and polyhydroxyalkanoates production and systems LCA/economics benchmarking. Current interests extend to a wide remit namely the integration of anaerobic bioprocesses in biorefining as well as with a number of other industrial processes and energy systems. She is currently part of the Scientific Advisory Council of the European Biogas Association and the UK ADBA Cost Competitiveness Task Force.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr.-Ing. Simón González-Martínez

 

Chemical engineer from the National University of Mexico (UNAM) and Dr.-Ing. in biotechnology and bioengineering of wastewater at Karlsruhe University (now Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), Germany. Actually he is senior researcher at the Institute of Engineering at the National University of Mexico. He is author or co-author of over 140 papers in indexed journals, congresses, conferences and symposia, and of more than 80 research reports for sponsors. Since 1990 he regularly teaches biological wastewater treatment at UNAM. From 2006 to 2009 he was member of the Water Science and Technology Board of the National Academy of Sciences in the United States. Since 2009 he is associate editor of the journal Water Science and Technology. In 2012 he was named IWA Fellow.

 

 

Jens Bo Holm-Nielsen, Ph.D.

He is Head of Bioenergy and Green Engineering Center at Department of Energy technology at Aalborg University, Denmark. He has years of experience in the field of Biorefinery concepts and Biogas production – Anaerobic Digestion. Implementation projects of Bioenergy Systems. Extended studies in Biomass Resources. Experience of a variety of EU and UN projects. Organizer of international conferences, workshops and training programs in Europe, Central Asia and China.

His main research deals with development and demonstration programs in integrated agriculture, environment and energy systems solutions.

2000: Honorary Bioenergy Center, SDU, Denmark and partners – Best National Renewable Energy Partnership. Awarded by DG TREN – EU Commission

2010: Professor D.L. Massart Award in Chemometrics. Awarded by the Belgian Chemometrics Society for the best world-wide Ph.D. thesis in the research field during the period of 2008-2010.

 

 

Dr. Samir Kumar Khanal

 

He is an Associate Professor of Biological Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Previously, he was a post-doctoral research associate and Research Assistant Professor at Iowa State University for 6 years. Dr. Khanal obtained a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a focus in Environmental Biotechnology from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong in 2002. Dr. Khanal is a leading researcher, internationally, in the bioenergy field and has over ten active research projects in the topics of bioenergy/biobased products and environmental biotechnology. Dr. Khanal, to date, has published over 70 refereed papers in high quality international journals. In addition, he also wrote and published a book entitled “Anaerobic Biotechnology for Bioenergy Production: Principles and Applications” (Wiley-Blackwell, 2008). Dr. Khanal edited another book, as the Lead Editor, entitled “Bioenergy and Biofuel from Biowastes and Biomass” (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2010). Both books have become best-sellers. He along with Dr. Li completed a very first textbook on bioenergy entitled "Bioenergy: Principles and Application (Wiley-Blackwell). He has supervised 10 Ph.D., 14 M.S., 12 undergraduate and 4 high school students, 7 post-docs and 5 visiting scholars. Dr. Khanal is also an editorial board member of the highly prestigious international journal, Bioresource Technology. Prof. Dr. mont. Odorico Konrad

 

PhD in Environmental and Sanitary Engineering by Montanuniversität Leoben Austria (2002), undergraduate Diploma in Civil Engineering from the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (1992). He is currently a professor/research at UNIVATES and coordinator of bioreactors Laboratory. He has large experience in Environmental Engineering, mainly with the following topics: biogas, bioreactors, renewable energy, solid waste, composting and environmental sanitation.

 

 

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Kranert

 

He is full professor, board member of the Institute of Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Solid Waste Management and Chairholder of Waste Management and Emissions since October 2002 and director of the interfacultative study programme environmental engineering. From 2011 to 2013 he was Dean of the faculty of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Stuttgart. Main focus in research are waste management models, waste analyses, biological waste treatment systems, advanced decentralized waste management systems, waste management in megacities of tomorrow, waste prevention (esp. food-waste) and the international knowledge transfer. He wrote more than 250 scientific papers and publications and is co-author and editor of several books. He is member of scientific committees in international conferences, project manager and project partner in national and international projects funded by EU, BMBF, DBU, AIF and other public industrial and private institutions, member in different national and international organizations and committees and in advisory boards.

 

 

Dr. Stephanie Lansing

She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland in the Department of Environmental Science & Technology, with academic affiliations in University Maryland Energy Research Center and Marine Estuarine Environmental Sciences Graduate Program. Dr. Lansing earned her M.S. (2004) and Ph.D. (2008) in Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering from the Ohio State University. She served as an Environmental Educator in Peace Corps-Belize (2000-2002) after receiving her B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of Oklahoma (2000). Her research includes small-scale anaerobic digester design and optimization, digesting with food waste, cover crops and poultry manure, combining microbial fuel cells and anaerobic digesters for sanitary wastewater, gasification of poultry manure, development of bio-plastics from waste, advanced nutrient capture technology post-digestion, and modeling using ADM1, LCA and “energy”. She has research projects in Haiti, Costa Rica, Ghana, Sierra Leone, China, Kenya, and the United States. She teaches classes Renewable Energy, Ecological Design and Sustainable Technologies for Developing Countries. Dr. Lansing received the Mentor of the Year Award from the 21st Institute for Teaching and Mentoring in 2014, having mentored a highly diverse student population including 3 M.S. students, 6 Ph.D. students, and 19 undergraduate researchers. She has received over $2 million in competitive research grants from NSF, USAID, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, US Dept. of Agriculture, US Geological Service, and the US Dept. of Transportation.


 

Heinz-Peter Mang

 

Heinz Peter is a German biogas engineer with more than 30 years bioenergy project experiences on all continents. He works since 2005 as Guest-Professor at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, and as international bioenergy consultant, bringing in highest experiences on biogas, bioenergy, sanitation, waste-to-energy, and sustainable agriculture.

 

 

 

Associate Professor Bernadette McCabe

 

She is a senior research scientist with the National Centre for Engineering in Agriculture (NCEA) at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). She holds a PhD from the University of Western Sydney and a BSc (Hons) from the University of Sydney. Bernadette is the leader for Energy Conservation Management research theme and science leader for Bioresources and Waste Utilisation at the NCEA. Her research interests are in anaerobic digestion processes, specifically in understanding the microbiological and biochemical degradation of agricultural and industrial waste to form methane. She has led a number of externally funded projects through NCEA investigating the feasibility of biogas production using anaerobic digestion technologies in the treatment of high strength abattoir wastewater and also feedlot manure.  Bernadette represents Australia as National Team Leader in the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Bioenergy Task 37: Energy from Biogas. She has focussed interests in the long term R & D strategies required by agriculture and food processing industries in order to increase the adoption of biogas in Australia.

René Moletta

He has made research and development in anaerobic digestion since 1980 as Director of Research at the french institut INRA and now as consultant in "Moletta Methanisation." He coordinates three books on the environment including one on biogas. It is a specialist in microbiological  reactions and technology for biogas production.

Claudia Pabón, Ph.D.

She is Assistant Professor at Universidad Adolfo Ibanez and Academic Director of Ecoparque Peñalolén-UAI in Santiago de Chile.

She received her PhD. in Environmental Sciences and in Production Ecology and Resource Conservation in 2009 from Wageningen University, The Netherlands and graduated with honors as M.Sc. in Environmental Sciences, from the same University. She also holds a bachelor in Industrial Engineering from Universidad Javeriana, Colombia.

Claudia was Director of the Energy and Environmental Engineering career at Universidad Adolfo Ibanez in Chile. Nowadays she teaches several courses including Principles of Environmental Engineering, Waste prevention, valorization and treatment, and Environment and Society. She has also experience in curricula development and redesign. In the past she has also been docent in the Urban Environmental Management Group in Wageningen University. So far she has advised over 25 MSc students in their thesis research.

Claudia has devoted her academic career to studying biological options for residues and wastewater treatment and reuse, focusing on closing material cycles in urban, periurban and rural settings. Her special interest is on the role of anaerobic digestion as a technology allowing for efficient energy, nutrients and water recovery in different settings.

Professor Pabón has been consultant in Europe, Asia and Latin-America in topics related to her expertise in organic residues and wastewater management and has also lead trainings in different parts of the world. She is currently Director of Traesure, a company devoted to innovation, consultancy and education in wastewater and residues valorization and closing material cycles.

 

 

Professor Ashok Pandey

 

He is Chief Scientist and Head of Biotechnology Division at CSIR’s National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology at Trivandrum. His current major research interests are on bio-based economy development (biomass-based biorefinery for the production of fuels and chemicals). He has >1100 publications/communications, which include 15 patents, 50 books, 125 book chapters, 410 original and review papers, etc with h index of 72 and >22,400 citation (Goggle scholar). He has transferred four technologies to industries on industrial enzymes and has done industrial consultancy for about a dozen projects for Indian/international industries


Professor Pandey is recipient of many national/international awards and fellowships, which include Fellow of International Society for Energy, Environment and Sustainability; National Academy of Science (India); Biotech Research Society, India; International Organization of Biotechnology and Bioengineering and Association of Microbiologists of India; Honorary Doctorate degree from Univesite Blaise Pascal, France; Thomson Scientific India Citation Laureate Award, USA; Visiting Professor in the Universite Blaise Pascal, France, Federal University of Parana, Brazil and EPFL, Switzerland, etc..
